What: The North Carolina National Guard (NCNG) will promote one of their senior leaders to the rank of Brigadier General.

N.C. Guardsman to be Promoted to Brig. Gen.

The North Carolina National Guard will promote Army Col. John Byrd to the rank of brigadier general at the NCNG Joint Force Headquarters here scheduled to begin at 2 p.m., Friday, Jan. 24.

Byrd, a resident of Spring Hope, N.C., enlisted in the NCNG in 1981. Since that time, Col. Byrd has held numerous leadership positions from platoon to corps level. He deployed overseas in 2003 in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom.

In his civilian capacity Byrd is a special Agent in Charge with the North Carolina State Bureau of Investigation and serves as a Forensic Scientist Manager in the State Crime Laboratory.

Byrd received his commission in 1984 from Campbell University, where he earned a B.S. degree in Biology. Byrd is also a graduate of the Infantry Officer Basic and Advanced courses, Joint Domestic Operations and Joint Commander’s Training Course, Combined Arms Services Staff School, Command and General Staff Officer Course, and the U.S. Army War College with a Master of Strategic Studies.

The NCNG Public Affairs Office will help to facilitate interviews per request at the conclusion of the ceremony.
