The Private Protective Services Board is offering a required in-service training module offered via the North Carolina Justice Academy Training Portal for law enforcement and security professionals.
The course entitled 2026 Understanding the Roles and Authority of Private Protective Services, was first offered in 2020 as an optional topic of choice. This year, however, it is one of the required courses that all North Carolina law enforcement officers must complete.
The purpose of providing this two-credit hour training course is to educate NC LEOs about the laws, rules, and requirements related to private security personnel working in their communities. An estimated 30,000 private security and investigative professionals work in North Carolina, and law enforcement officers regularly encounter these individuals while on and off duty. As the number of security professionals working in our communities continues to grow, law enforcement officers need to know and understand the various laws and regulations these security professionals must adhere to, such as credentialing by the NC Private Protective Services Board, and when and where security guards may carry firearms or use force.
LEOs will need to log in to the NCJA Training Portal to begin this course. (Note: Link will open in new tab)
