Checklist: Are You Ready to Apply for Victim Compensation?

Before You Start

Survivors of violent crime and families of homicide victims may be eligible for financial assistance if:

  • The crime happened in North Carolina and was reported to law enforcement within six months.
  • The victim applies no more than two years after the crime occurred.
  • The victim was directly injured, either physically or psychologically.
  • The victim lost income or faces expenses for eligible services in the first year after the crime.
  • The victim was not participating in a crime or in activities that contributed to the crime against them at the time of injury.

Note: You can apply as soon as you have documents to support at least one (1) type of claim. New documents related to this crime should then be added to the open application. If applying on behalf of multiple victims of the same crime, you will need to submit a separate application for each victim.
