The State Highway Patrol is investigating a fatal collision that occurred in Lee County this morning on East Forest Oaks Road involving a Lee County Sheriff’s Deputy and a ATV.

At approximately 1:00 a.m. on Friday, March 18, 2016, a Lee County Deputy was traveling east on East Forest Oaks Road near Lower Moncure Road when he met a 2004 Honda ATV traveling west, straddling the centerline of the roadway. As the two vehicles met each other, they collided. After impact, the deputy's vehicle traveled onto the right shoulder and struck a ditch bank before coming to a final rest. The ATV traveled onto the right shoulder resulting in the driver being ejected. He died at the scene. The deputy was transported to Central Carolina Hospital with non-life threatening injuries but has since been released.  A preliminary investigation indicates that the ATV operator traveled left of center into the path of the deputy's vehicle.

The driver of the ATV has been identified as Shelton Lee McLean, 31, of 75 Lindsey Lane, Sanford, N.C.

The deputy has been identified as Manuel Antonio Torres.

Troopers are continuing their investigation into this case but charges are not expected.
