North Carolina may be eligible for an additional $125 million in disaster recovery funding to provide much needed relief for communities still recovering from Hurricane Matthew, Governor Roy Cooper said Thursday.

Under the U.S Senate budget proposal announced today, North Carolina could see up to $100 million for housing needs related to Hurricane Matthew, and $25 million to repair roads damaged by the storm.

“Hurricane Matthew hit our state hard, and communities are still working every day to recover from the storm’s devastating impacts. There is still much work to be done, and this latest round of funding will help us continue our strong recovery,” Governor Cooper said. “I am grateful for the bipartisan work that went into securing these funds for North Carolina and urge Congress to approve this much-needed help.”

The $100 million in the form of Community Development Block Grant Disaster Relief (CDBG-DR) from the Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) would allow North Carolina to help many more communities in dangerous flood zones.

Gov. Cooper has worked closely with the state’s congressional delegation to fight for additional federal funds to help the state recover fully, and will also work with legislators on any additional state funds needed.

Hurricane Matthew caused an estimated $4.8 billion in damage to 50 counties in North Carolina. If Congress approves the added $125 million in funding for North Carolina, it will increase overall funding for Matthew recovery to approximately $1.6 billion dollars.

North Carolina is currently accepting applications from residents who suffered damage to their homes from Hurricane Matthew.
