Piedmont Inmate Dies in Apparent Suicide

Offender David Atkins (#1465138) died Oct. 1 at Piedmont Correctional Institution after an apparent suicide. He was found unresponsive in his cell at approximately 7:48 p.m. Prison medical staff and local paramedics responded and worked to resuscitate the offender. He was pronounced dead at 8:30 p.m. at the facility.

Atkins, 31, was originally convicted of obtaining property by false pretenses in Davidson County on June 12, 2017. He was returned to prison for violating the terms of his post release and was serving a 1-year 7-month sentence. Atkins was scheduled to be released on Nov. 18.

Local law enforcement was contacted, and the incident is under internal investigation.
