On March 11 at approximately 6:55 p.m. at Maury Correctional Institution, offender William Walls (#0422980) was assaulted and killed at the facility.
Walls, 72, was struck by another offender during an altercation and was found unresponsive. Correctional officers, medical staff and local paramedics performed CPR until Walls was pronounced deceased at 8:14 p.m. by the EMS.
The Greene County Sheriff’s Department and the State Bureau of Investigation are conducting an investigation into the incident. DPS is cooperating with law enforcement and will seek criminal prosecution against any offender involved in the altercation.
The area of the incident was placed on lockdown until law enforcement is finished with the investigation. All other areas of the facility are under normal operation.
Walls was convicted of second degree murder in Rockingham County on Nov. 29, 1979 and was serving a life sentence.
