Update: Randolph Correctional Escapee Apprehended

Randolph Correctional Center minimum custody offender Grady R. York (#0456815), who escaped from the Asheboro facility around 9 a.m. today, was apprehended by Randolph County Sheriff’s deputies at 12:29 p.m. in Staley.

After his escape, York apparently hitched rides and knocked on the door of a residence in Staley, 17 miles from the prison. The occupant of the residence called the authorities, who took him in to custody. York was transported back to Randolph Correctional Center, but will be moved to a higher custody facility and will face charges for his escape. How he escaped is under investigation.

Also assisting in the search for York were members of the Central Prison canine team, Randolph Correctional Center, Randolph Community Corrections, Liberty Police Department and Asheboro Police Department.

York, 49, was serving a term of 15 years and five months as a habitual felon after convictions for larceny, breaking and entering and other property crimes. He was admitted to prison on May 8, 2014. He was scheduled for release on Sept. 11, 2023.
