An offender at Bertie Correctional Institution in Windsor died on Aug. 18 in an apparent suicide.
Offender Kyle Berry (#0562597) was found unresponsive in his cell at 3:41 pm. Custody and facility medical staff began immediate life-saving procedures. Outside EMS was called to the facility and he was declared deceased at approximately 3:52 p.m.
Berry, 40, was originally serving two sentences on Death Row for the 1998 death of 16 year-old Theresa Fetter in New Hanover County. He was removed from Death Row in 2010 after a court appeal.
NCDPS officials are cooperating with local law enforcement from Bertie County and Windsor as they conduct the investigation.
