Piedmont Correctional Offender Dies in Apparent Suicide
Piedmont Correctional Institution offender Didier J. Carias (#1479374) has died after an apparent suicide.

SALISBURY— Piedmont Correctional Institution offender Didier J. Carias (#1479374) has died after an apparent suicide.
He was found unresponsive in his cell around 2:40 p.m. today. The prison’s first responders performed lifesaving measures, and EMS was called. He was pronounced deceased shortly after.
Law enforcement was notified of the death and is investigating, as is common in these circumstances. The Department of Public Safety is cooperating fully in the investigation and is also conducting its own investigation.
Carias, 29, was admitted to prison on Aug. 25, 2022, for a conviction in Chatham County of assault with a deadly weapon with intent to kill. He was scheduled to be released Feb. 3, 2024.
