Preparing for the National Spatial Reference System Modernization
The National Geodetic Survey (NGS) is modernizing the National Spatial Reference System (NSRS), with the new 2022 Datums scheduled for implementation in 2027. This change will provide a more accurate and reliable foundation for positioning, mapping, surveying, engineering, construction, geographic information system, and other activities that depend on accurate location information.
Preparing for the NSRS modernization now is important. Organizations that collect, manage, or use spatial data will need to understand how the 2022 datums may affect existing coordinates, surveys, geospatial datasets, mapping products, workflows, equipment, software, and data management practices. Planning ahead will help minimize disruptions, identify potential impacts, and ensure a smooth transition when the 2022 datums are implemented in 2027.

This image shows what could happen when a bridge and road are built by two different contractors using different Vertical Datums. In this scenario the bridge contractor uses the North American-Pacific Geopotential Datum and the road builder uses the North American Vertical Datum of 1988, which means the road would be built more than 10-inches lower than the bridge.
