State and local law enforcement officers and federal agents teamed up last week for a compliance operation focused on violent felons and gang members on probation or parole in Mecklenburg County. Operation Big Game from Feb. 1-5 resulted in 18 arrests and the seizures of weapons and drugs, including 15 firearms and quantities of cocaine, marijuana, heroin, Ecstasy and crystal methamphetamine. Officers recovered more than $2,600 in cash and a stolen motorcycle. Two of the seized firearms were determined to be stolen.
Participating agencies included the North Carolina Department of Public Safety’s Adult Correction division and the North Carolina Highway Patrol, Charlotte Mecklenburg Police Department, Mecklenburg County Sheriff’s Office, U.S. Marshals Violent Offender Task Force, Homeland Security Investigations, FBI Safe Streets Task Force, ICE Fugitive Investigations and the Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms Task Force.
“This operation helped take dangerous drugs and weapons off our streets, put violators behind bars and sent a strong message to those on probation and parole that illegal activity will not be tolerated, ”said North Carolina Public Safety Secretary Frank L. Perry. “We are always grateful to our local and federal law enforcement partners for their support and collaboration in keeping North Carolina communities safe.”
