The North Carolina National Guard mobilized the headquarters and Headquarters Company of the 105th Military Police Battalion (HHC 105th MP BN) at Trinity Baptist Church, on Nov. 28 in support of Operation Enduring Freedom, Guantanamo Bay, Cuba.

The HHC 105th MP BN is led by Lt. Col. Sarah E. Dicks and Command Sergeant Major James Hummel and consists of senior soldiers with a wide array of military and civilian skills.

The unit will provide command, control and administrative supervision of the Joint Detention Group in order to provide safe, humane, legal, and transparent of detainees currently present at Guantanamo Bay. This is not the unit’s first deployment, the 105th Military Battalion (I/R) deployed in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom from September, 2004 to October, 2005. During this deployment, the unit provided all command and control and logistical support of the Camp Bucca Theater Internment Facility located near the port of Um Qasr in Iraq.

During the deployment at Camp Bucca, the 105th MP BN managed a detainee population which grew from 2,500 to over 7,500 personnel in three months. The unit was awarded the Meritorious Unit Commendation for its service during this period under the command of both the 16th and 18th Military Police Brigades.

The 105th MP BN deployed again in 2010-2011 to Camp Cropper, Iraq in support of Operations Iraqi Freedom and New Dawn. During its deployment, the unit’s mission was to conduct detention operations for the Baghdad area of operations.

When the U.S. Army transitioned its Theater Internment Facilities to the Government of Iraq, the 105th MP BN provided command and control of the Camp Cropper Internment Facility as it transitioned to an Iraqi Correctional Facility.

The Battalion maintained control of the only remaining detention facility under U.S. authority following this transition. The unit redeployed back to North Carolina and returned to state control in February 2011.
