Prisons and Law Enforcement Investigate Inmate Death at Bertie Correctional

The Department of Public Safety and Windsor Police Department are investigating the death of an inmate following a fight Friday night at Bertie Correctional Institution.

Preliminary indications are that five inmates were involved in the fight around 10:30 last night. Correctional staff broke up the fight and called EMS. Two inmates were taken to the hospital.

Joleski Floyd, 24, died at the hospital at approximately 4:30 Saturday afternoon. He was serving a 10-to-13 year sentence for second degree murder. He had been in prison since January 2010 after being convicted in connection with the July 2008 shooting death of Derrick Barden in Warsaw.

The other inmate was treated for a minor injury and is now back at the prison.

Also, Saturday morning, another fight broke out where another inmate was injured. He is at the hospital listed in stable condition.

Bertie Correctional is on a modified lockdown while the investigation is ongoing.
