The State Highway Patrol has charged the driver,
Kanak Singh, 28, of Raleigh, N.C.,
with the following charges as a result of the fatal collision that occurred on Monday, August 3, 2015 on I-540 near the Wake/Durham county line:
- Misdemeanor Death by a Motor Vehicle
- Failure to Maintain Lane Control
Please be advised that this collision occurred in Durham County and not Wake County as noted in initial press release below. A copy of the collision report is being provided for your viewing as well.

The State Highway Patrol has identified both drivers involved in today’s fatal collision that occurred on I-540.
The driver of the 2012 Honda motorcycle has been identified as
Philip James Sabino, 44, of 10821 Cahill Road, Raleigh, N.C
. Mr. Sabino died as a result of the collision.
The driver of the 2003 Honda passenger vehicle has been identified as
Kanak Singh, 28, of 8004 Neches Lane, Raleigh, N.C.
Alcohol and speed were NOT a factor in this collision. Troopers will be conferring with the Wake County District Attorney’s Office in the near future as to possible charges.

The driver of the 2012 Honda motorcycle has been identified as
Philip James Sabino, 44, of 10821 Cahill Road, Raleigh, N.C
. Mr. Sabino died as a result of the collision.
The driver of the 2003 Honda passenger vehicle has been identified as
Kanak Singh, 28, of 8004 Neches Lane, Raleigh, N.C.

RALEIGH –
At approximately 4:30 p.m. on Monday, August 3, the State Highway Patrol responded to a fatal collision on I-540 near Aviation Drive.
Based on a preliminary investigation, a silver Honda passenger vehicle was traveling west on I-540 when it traveled into the median. The vehicle then traveled through the guard wire into the eastbound lanes of I-540 where it collided into a motorcycle. The impact resulted in the motorcyclist being ejected. As a result of the collision, the motorcyclist died at the scene. It is unclear at this time what caused the driver to veer into the median.
All westbound lanes of I-540 are open and only one eastbound lane is open as investigators continue their investigation. The identity of all involved parties are not available at this time.
Upon completion of the collision investigation, troopers will confer with the Wake County District Attorney’s Office as to possible charges.
