Links to various online public records

There are many public records already available online which you can access without making a public records request. Here are just a few:
 

NCDPS CORRECTIONS INFORMATION 

  • NCDPS Prisons Policy & Procedure Manual – An up-to-date listing of all policies governing North Carolina correctional facilities. 
  • NCDPS Prisons Health Care Policy Manual – An up-to-date listing of all healthcare policies governing North Carolina correctional facilities. 
     

CRIMINAL OFFENDER INFORMATION 

  • Offender Public Information Search / Locator - Search by name or offender ID for up-to-date information on North Carolina state prisoners, probationers, and parolees. This database from the NC Department of Public Safety and the former NC Department of Correction contains historical information back to 1972. Does not include county jail information. 

  • Automated System Query (ASQ) - This search tool queries the same NCDPS database as the public offender search, but allows you to create specialized reports based on criteria that you select.  Returns counts and demographic information on offenders but not specific offender identities. 

STATE HIGHWAY PATROL 

  • Collision Information – Crash reports may be obtained regarding traffic accidents investigated by the North Carolina State Highway Patrol. Reports are normally entered into the system within 5-7 business days after the accident. 

  • Certified Crash Reports – Certified crash reports must be obtained from the North Carolina Department of Motor Vehicles. 

  • Medical Examiner and Toxicology Reports – These records must be requested through the Chief Medical Examiner’s Office. 

  • Frequently Asked Questions – Contains answers to frequently asked questions received by the State Highway Patrol.

NORTH CAROLINA EMERGENCY MANAGEMENT 

  • North Carolina Flood Maps 

  • Flood Document Center – Fact sheets, Letters of Map Change (LOMC), Issue Papers and other documents  

  • Spatial Data – Flood hazards, LiDAR data, Data on structures and other built environment

  • NCEM plans and guides  

  • Websites for past disasters 

  • Coastal Evacuation Zones (Know Your Zone) 
     

NORTH CAROLINA SBI 

  • Background Checks – The North Carolina State Bureau of Investigation is the central repository for criminal information for the state of North Carolina. The SBI offers the public and authorized agencies criminal background checks. 

  • NC Sex Offender Registry - This database shows residential locations of registered sex offenders in North Carolina. Maintained by the State Bureau of Investigation. 
     

COURT RECORDS 

  • North Carolina Judicial Branch – NCDPS is not the custodian of court records. To request records regarding criminal and civil cases, police reports and traffic citations, contact the North Carolina Judicial Branch or the Clerk of Court in the county where the citation was issued.
