Utility crews continue to repair damages caused by the strong winds that caused power outages across North Carolina. As of 3:00 p.m. today there are more than 169,000 outages across the state, which is down from the peak total of more than 485,000. Utility crews continue to assess damage and make repairs.

With the possibility of icy conditions in the western part of the state and below average temperatures expected as an arctic mass approaches, Governor Roy Cooper signed a State of Emergency today to activate the state’s emergency operations plan, waive transportation regulations to help the transport of fuel and critical supplies, help first responders and protect consumers from price gouging.

North Carolina Emergency Management, state and local law enforcement officials are working in a coordinated response with Duke Energy to restore power as quickly as possible after widespread power outages in Moore County last night. State and federal law enforcement are on the ground and have begun investigating in coordination with local law enforcement.

Hurricane Ian struck a devastating blow to southwest Florida before rolling through North Carolina with relatively minor impact. Several N.C. Emergency Management employees and North Carolina responders who originally had braced 
to provide local support, deployed instead to the Sunshine State.
