As part of Hurricane Preparedness Week, Governor Roy Cooper is urging North Carolinians to learn about and prepare for the dangers of severe tropical weather in preparation for the upcoming hurricane season. Hurricane season runs from June 1 through November 30.

This is due in part to the modernization of the National Spatial Reference System (NSRS) and to provide national uniformity in measuring length.

Utility crews continue to repair damages caused by the strong winds that caused power outages across North Carolina. As of 3:00 p.m. today there are more than 169,000 outages across the state, which is down from the peak total of more than 485,000. Utility crews continue to assess damage and make repairs.

Emergency management officials are monitoring conditions across the state as strong winds have caused downed trees and power lines.

With the possibility of icy conditions in the western part of the state and below average temperatures expected as an arctic mass approaches, Governor Roy Cooper signed a State of Emergency today to activate the state’s emergency operations plan, waive transportation regulations to help the transport of fuel and critical supplies, help first responders and protect consumers from price gouging.
