Governor Roy Cooper reminded North Carolinians to remain ready and aware as the state begins to feel rain and winds from Hurricane Irma later today. National Guard soldiers, Highway Patrol troopers and rescue teams are poised and ready to go if needed.

Weather the storm inside.  Motorists in some of the westernmost counties of North Carolina are experiencing dangerous driving conditions this evening with the remnants of Hurricane Irma dropping trees and dumping rain on the roads.

In response to Governor Roy Cooper’s activation order, the North Carolina National Guard will open three staging areas today to support local authorities’ response to Hurricane Irma. About 315 soldiers and airmen are being deployed to centers in Asheville, Greensboro and Charlotte.

A fifth shelter will open at noon today in Greensboro to accommodate people who are coming to North Carolina to get out of Hurricane Irma’s path. The shelter is operated by the American Red Cross and located in a City of Greensboro facility at 2305 Soabar St.
