Sworn And Civilian Recipients Honored During SHP Awards Ceremony

The State Highway Patrol honored the actions of several sworn and civilian members today during an awards ceremony held at the National Guard Joint Force Headquarters in Raleigh.  

The venue began with an invocation provided by SHP Chaplain Phillip Bland.  Following the invocation, Colonel Glenn M. McNeill, Jr., addressed the award recipients, praising their heroic efforts while ensuring public safety.    

State Highway Patrol Welcomes 23 New Troopers

The State Highway Patrol proudly welcomed 23 new troopers at a graduation held for the 149th Basic Highway Patrol School. The ceremony ended 12 weeks of demanding training preparing cadets for a rewarding career of service to the state of North Carolina.  
 

State Highway Patrol Conducts 2019 “Operation Stop Arm”

In support of Operation Stop Arm week the State Highway Patrol will be aggressively enforcing stop arm violations and other traffic violations in and around school zones. The operation will run daily from 6:00 am on Monday, October 21 through 5:00 pm on Friday, October 25. The Patrol expects Operation Stop Arm will decrease violations and reduce school bus incidents involving children.

What: The State Highway Patrol will hold a press event to kick off this year’s Operation Stop Arm school bus safety initiative. Representatives from the State Highway Patrol, the Department of Public Instruction and the Wake County Public School System will speak at this event.     

When: Monday, October 21, 2019, at 10 a.m.  
 
Where: Outside the Kerr Scott Building at the State Highway Patrol’s static display on the N.C. State Fairgrounds.  
 

Governor Cooper Leads Bipartisan Group of Governors to Push for Federal Disaster Recovery Reform

Today, Governor Roy Cooper led a bipartisan group of governors in calling on Congress to make critical reforms to long-term federal disaster recovery programs. Governors from Alabama, Illinois, Indiana, Missouri, North Carolina, Virginia and Wisconsin sent a letter to Congressional leadership advocating for faster, more efficient help. 

As the number of natural disasters lashing our country grows, it is increasingly important to streamline disaster recovery programs to help survivors get the resources they need as quickly as possible, the letter said. 

Escapee Captured and Heading Back to Prison

Law enforcement captured a Wake Correctional minimum custody offender who did not return from his work release job in Garner on Sept. 20, 2019.

Latroy Strickland (# 0565506) was picked up by the Raleigh Police Department before dawn today for crimes he allegedly committed while he was being sought for escape. According to police, he apparently gave an alias but his true identity was confirmed a few hours later.

ALE Becomes a Division Within Department of Public Safety

Alcohol Law Enforcement (ALE) is now a division within the Department of Public Safety. Due to legislation signed by Gov. Roy Cooper on Aug. 27, ALE was re-established as a division within DPS effective Oct. 1. Secretary Erik A. Hooks announced Bryan House will be the interim director of ALE.

Highway Patrol Names New Deputy Commander and Lt. Colonel

The State Highway Patrol is proud to announce majors Jeff Gordon and Donna Carter will begin new roles within the organization on October 7.  Due to the retirements of former Deputy Commander Vic Ward and Lt. Colonel Alan Melvin on October 1, the newly appointed members have been selected to fill the high-ranking positions.   

Highway Patrol Announces Trooper Promotions Moving Forward

The State Highway Patrol has announced it will be moving forward with its promotion process following the conclusion of an internal investigation as well as an investigation by North Carolina State University (NCSU). 

“Having personally reviewed the SHP investigative report, I can say the promotion scores and rankings were released before the promotion list was published. However, there is no evidence the integrity of the testing process itself was compromised,” SHP Colonel Glenn McNeill stated.
