Suspected Impaired Driver Collides Head-on into Wake County Deputy

Jan 1, 2016

At approximately 6:12 a.m. on Friday, Jan. 1, the State Highway Patrol responded to a head-on collision involving a Wake County seputy on Poole Road near the intersection of Grasshopper Road.

According to a preliminary investigation, Deputy Joseph Samuel Coley, 44, was traveling west on Poole Road and was attempting to locate an earlier report of a disable vehicle or possible motor vehicle collision. As the deputy traveled west on Poole Road, he observed a 2008 Kia Sedona mini-van traveling east on Poole Road. As the two vehicle approached each other, the mini-van crossed the centerline into the deputy's lane of travel. The deputy quickly slowed down, activated his blue lights and attempted to move to the far right to avoid a head-on collision. The Kia continued, eventually colliding head-on into the deputy's 2012 Dodge Charger.

The driver of the Kia was identified as Carlos Alberto Moya, 56, of 1800 Fountain Drive, Raleigh. Both drivers were transported to Wake Medical Center. Deputy Coley received minor injuries. Mr. Moya had non-life threatening injuries and is currently listed in stable condition.

Investigators believe that Moya was impaired at the time of the collision and was charged with the following:

  • Driving While Impaired
  • Driving Left of Center
  • Failing to Wear a Seatbelt
  • Failing to Comply with Driver's License Restriction
