Each April, the NC Department of Public Safety joins partners in raising awareness of crime victims’ rights and highlighting the network of victim resources and service providers available across our state. From April 19-26, the North Carolina State Capitol will be illuminated in purple, a symbol of solidarity with survivors. North Carolinians are encouraged to wear purple and share messages to help build awareness statewide.

During this half hour event, a member of DPS will read a story of their choice and talk a little bit about their role within the department. This is a great opportunity for kids and parents alike to learn more about the department and the people who work here. The November 1 event will be a bilingual reading. Two readers will dive into the world of Micha Archer, reading her story Wonder Walkers, which won the Caldecott Honor, in both English and Spanish.

The purpose of VOD is to bring together offenders and victims of a crime to provide an opportunity for them to engage in open and facilitated communication to address the harm caused, understand the impact of the offense and find ways to promote healing and resolution.
