Conrad Paul James, 27, is charged with inciting a riot (felony), 1st degree trespass, resisting an officer and injury to personal property, according to arrest warrants. The warrants are for events that took place on State Capitol Grounds on Friday and Sunday nights.  One of the charges, inciting a riot, is in connection with the events of Friday night that included the damage done to two monuments.

The State Highway Patrol is requesting the public’s assistance in locating a vehicle sought in a deadly hit-and-run collision that occurred in Cleveland County. On Friday, June 12 at approximately 7:26 p.m., troopers responded to a vehicle collision on NC 150 near Ridge Rd.

The State Highway Patrol proudly welcomed 42 new troopers at a graduation ceremony held for the 150th Basic Highway Patrol School.  The ceremony ended what was a truly unique Patrol School experience as much of the training was forced to adapt due to COVID-19 safety protocols.

Governor Roy Cooper signed Executive Order No. 145 today, forming the North Carolina Task Force for Racial Equity in Criminal Justice. The task force will recommend solutions to stop discriminatory law enforcement and criminal justice practices, and hold public safety officers accountable.

“We must acknowledge racial inequities in our systems of law enforcement and criminal justice, and then work to eliminate them. This task force will address policies and procedures that disproportionately burden communities of color,” said Governor Cooper.

As many across the nation and in North Carolina express horror at the death of George Floyd at the hands of a Minneapolis police officer, NC Public Safety Secretary Erik A. Hooks says it’s an appropriate time to take a closer look at our state law enforcement agencies’ policies regarding use of force, the duty to intervene and report instances of excessive force.

The Division of Adult Correction and Juvenile Justice has named Jennifer Walsh as warden of the Columbus Correctional Institution in Whiteville. She had served as associate warden for custody and operations at the prison since 2010.“Warden Walsh is an experienced prison administrator with decades of hands-on knowledge,” said Todd Ishee, Commissioner of Prisons Todd Ishee. “She is an excellent addition to our amazing team of prison leaders who work so hard to protect the staff, offenders and our communities.”

A minimum custody offender who escaped yesterday from Wake Correctional Center was caught today in the act of trying to steal a car, according to the Chapel Hill Police Department.

Offender Gerrhon D. Mills, (#0987453) was caught around noon today by the Chapel Hill Police Department. Mills was last seen around noon yesterday at the prison in Raleigh.

Yesterday, state and local officials shut down two illegal bars in Greensboro resulting in arrests, charges and seizures. 

ALE special agents began an investigation into a Greensboro residence after community members complained of illegal drug and alcohol sales. The residence, 918 Hackett Street, was the source of numerous shootings, assaults and calls for service, and was a drain on local law enforcement resources. 

The North Carolina State Highway Patrol held its annual memorial ceremony today in Raleigh in remembrance of 67 fallen members.  Remarks were delivered by Colonel Glenn McNeill Jr., commander of the State Highway Patrol.  Colonel McNeill’s remarks exhibited a continued support for the families, friends and coworkers of our fallen members to include our recent loss of Trooper Nolan Sanders in March.
 

The Division of Adult Correction and Juvenile Justice reports that a juvenile placed in its custody at the Chatham Youth Development Center failed to return to the facility today following a home visit.The juvenile is identified as Lovit P and was last seen on March 14, 2020, at approximately 10 p.m. in Charlotte. The juvenile’s home county is Mecklenburg County. The division has notified local law enforcement and is cooperating fully with the investigation.Members of the public should report sightings of this juvenile to local law enforcement officials.
