The State Highway Patrol honored 55 sworn and 11 civilian members today during a promotional ceremony held at Colonial Baptist Church in Cary.

The ceremony began with an invocation offered by Pastor Steve Stadtmiller followed by the singing of the National Anthem by Trp. Joey Garrett.  Offering welcome and remarks to those in attendance, Colonel Glenn McNeill Jr. spoke of the expectations required by each individual rank.

8:57 a.m. - At approximately 12:15 a.m. on Wednesday, October 17, a state trooper stopped a white GMC pickup truck for a speeding violation on US 701 near Sellers Town Rd in Columbus County.  The driver of the pickup pulled over onto the shoulder and the trooper made his initial approach.  The driver of the pickup then fired several shots, striking the trooper.  
At approximately 8:40 a.m. today at Scotland Correctional Institution, inmate Cadarius Thomas (#0821718) was involved in an assault on one correctional employee. Additional staff were called in to assist. The employee was taken to a local hospital for treatment of non-life-threatening injuries. Inmate Thomas was treated locally at the Scotland medical facility.

The assault occurred in the canteen area of a housing unit at the prison. That housing unit has been placed on lock down.
Eleven new officers with the State Capitol Police were sworn in on Monday in a formal ceremony at the Justice Building in Raleigh. 

Officers Kamille Brown-Thomas, Jean Caquias, Mark Coyne, David George, James “Bryant” Gibson, Justin Guthrie, Stephen Hall, Jason Kane, Randy Nelson, Richard Taylor, and Deputy Chief Roger “Chip” Hawley were all welcomed to the agency by Chief Glen Allen, who provided opening remarks. 
At approximately 5:46 a.m. today at Tabor Correctional Institution, an inmate was involved in an assault on one correctional employee. The employee was taken to a local medical facility for assessment and treatment of what appear to be non-life-threatening injuries and was released. The inmate received treatment for minor injuries from prison medical staff and is now in confined custody. The incident is under internal investigation and local law enforcement was contacted.
At Public Safety Secretary Erik A. Hooks’ request, the Governor’s Crime Commission has established a special committee consisting of representatives from law enforcement, juvenile justice, courts, schools and others to identify resources and develop recommendations to strengthen school safety.


Today during its quarterly meeting, the Governor’s Crime Commission discussed  prison management practices and efforts to improve safety at North Carolina prisons.

Department of Public Safety Secretary Erik A. Hooks today announced the addition of three new members to his leadership team. Susanna Davis will serve as Legislative Affairs Director for the department, Alicia Davis (no relation) will serve as Legislative Counsel and Mike Daniska is the Director of Policy and Planning.
The Department of Public Safety is taking immediate steps to make prisons safer following a violent attack at Pasquotank Correctional Institution in Elizabeth City that claimed the lives of two prison employees this week.
