The North Carolina state prison system is ending the use of solitary confinement for its youngest inmates and introducing a new youthful offender program to focus on the needs of young people serving sentences in the adult prison system.

The Department of Public Safety and Windsor Police Department are investigating the death of an inmate following a fight Friday night at Bertie Correctional Institution.

A two-day initiative named Operation Big Show focusing on the compliance of high-risk offenders on probation and parole supervision resulted in the arrest of 54 individuals and the service of more than 100 warrants. 

The Division of Adult Correction and Juvenile Justice has named Sonynia L. Leonard as Chief Court Counselor in Judicial District 6, comprised of Halifax, Northampton, Bertie and Hertford counties. Leonard assumed this post earlier this year.

The Division of Adult Correction and Juvenile Justice has named LaQreshia A. Bates-Harley as Chief Court Counselor in Judicial District 1, comprised of Camden, Chowan, Currituck, Dare, Gates, Pasquotank and Perquimans counties. Bates-Harley assumed this post in May.

Just as the summer vacation begins for thousands of students and families up and down the east coast, state troopers from North Carolina, Maryland, New York, Pennsylvania, South Carolina, Georgia, Florida and Virginia will once again engage in Operation Border to Border.

The Rocky Mount Police Department, in collaboration with the United States Marshals Service and the North Carolina Department of Public Safety, will be conducting a media briefing Thursday, June 9 at 11:30 a.m.

The North Carolina State Highway Patrol along with the Division of Law Enforcement Wildlife Resources Commission released the totals for “On the Road, On the Water, Don’t Drink and Drive campaign for the period of Friday, May 28 through Monday, May 30.
