United States Department of Agriculture Secretary Thomas Vilsack has granted North Carolina’s request for a primary county disaster designation for twelve North Carolina counties following excessive rain and flooding from Tropical Storm Fred that occurred from August 15 through August 17, 2021.

The State Emergency Response Commission will meet via video conference on Friday, Oct. 22.

On Oct. 21, millions of people across the globe, including more than 250,000 school children in K-12^th grade, have pledged to participate in the world’s largest earthquake drill.

After several homicides, drug violations and numerous calls to the Rowan County Sheriff’s Office, the Gheen Road community will soon see long-awaited changes.

In support of Operation Stop Arm week, the State Highway Patrol will be aggressively enforcing stop arm and other traffic violations in and around school zones and school bus stops. The operation will run daily from 6:00 a.m. on Monday, Oct. 18 through 5:00 p.m.

The State of North Carolina and FEMA have approved $964,806 to help the city of New Bern acquire, demolish and remove eight residential structures that were flooded after Hurricane Florence in 2018.

The Division of Adult Correction and Juvenile Justice has named Steven Niday as the new warden of the Forsyth Correctional Center in Winston-Salem.

Niday had been the associate warden for operations at Randolph Correctional near Asheboro.

Department of Public Safety Interim Secretary Casandra Hoekstra has named Caroline Farmer as the next executive director of the Governor’s Crime Commission. She will begin her new duties Monday, Oct. 18.

Local governments and certain nonprofit organizations in Ashe, Graham, Jackson and Mitchell counties are now eligible for FEMA Public Assistance grants for recovery from Tropical Storm Fred.
