What was the Prison Reform Advisory Board?

The Prison Reform Advisory Board served in an advisory role to the Secretary of the Department of Public Safety on best practices regarding policies, programs and services to ensure the safety and security of the state’s prison system. This advice covered topics including operations, training, staffing, technology, facility design, and offender work and program assignments. The seven-member Board predominantly consisted of experts in the field of corrections. The board members provided expert advice on best practices for maintaining prison safety.

The members were appointed by the DPS Secretary. Meetings were held quarterly, with the first meeting on March 20, 2018. The final meeting, which saw the presentation of 30 recommendations from the Board, was held on Oct. 23, 2019.
