Department of Public Safety Secretary Erik A. Hooks has named Brian Jones to be the new director of Private Protective Services. He comes to the department from the Durham County Sheriff’s Office, where he was director of planning and development. He will assume his new duties August 21.
Private Protective Services is the agency within the Department of Public Safety that supports the Private Protective Services and Alarms Systems Licensing Boards. The Boards are charged with administering the licensing, education and training requirements of the persons, firms, associations and corporations engaged in private protective services and alarms systems professions within North Carolina.
“Mr. Jones has a broad range of public safety and management experience that will serve him well in new his role as director of Private Protective Services,” said DPS Chief Deputy Secretary Pam Cashwell. “We are pleased to have someone with Mr. Jones’s wide experience join our team to help guide PPS as we move forward with our plans to modernize the agency to improve its efficiency and enhance customer service.”
Jones began his public safety career as a correctional officer with Florida Department of Corrections. Later, he served as a patrol officer, community policing officer and detective for the Pensacola, Florida Police Department. He then served as an assistant district attorney for the Durham District Attorney’s Office, where he was responsible for prosecuting felony drug offenses.
Jones received a bachelor’s degree in criminal justice and a master’s degree in administration from the University of West Florida and holds a juris doctor from the Vermont Law School.
