Victim Services

Victim Services has four programs:

  • Victims Compensation Services (en Español) reimburses citizens who suffer medical expenses and lost wages as a result of being an innocent victim of a crime committed in North Carolina.

  • Rape Victim Assistance Program pays for the cost of a forensic medical examination.

  • The North Carolina Statewide Automated Victim Assistance NC SAVAN (en Español) service is a criminal justice information sharing system that sends automated notifications regarding the victim’s offender.

  • Victim Services for Prisons, Probation and Parole helps crime victims and their families after the offenders are in custody or under DPS supervision.

Crime Victims Compensation

Victims of rape, assault, child sexual abuse, domestic violence, and drunk driving, as well as the families of homicide victims are eligible to apply for financial help.

Senate Bill 257 of the NC General Assembly’s 2017 Session expanded allowable expenses for Crime Victims Compensation for certain counseling. For crimes committed on or after July 1, 2017, Crime Victims Compensation may be able to pay for counseling for the victim’s family as described in the statute highlighted below. Note that the new allowable expense is for family counseling, not for individual counseling. The counseling cannot include the offender.
